Is it safe for me (a 16 year old) to volunteer at an Infectious Disease Department of a hospital?

I was recently offered a volunteer position, but my parents are quite skeptical. I was informed that a good 90 percent of the beds in the department are dedicated to AIDS and tuberculosis patients. How safe would that be for me? I really would like to, I'm just finding out on my parent's behalf.
